This post is to expand on a statement I made in the last post about the Silver Maple.

Growing up among old timers that have had to scratch a living, literally, out of the face of the mountain, you learn a thing or two about nature. Plants, animals, weather…

Two things that were important for a West Virginian living in the hollows to know, when it was going to start raining and when it was going to stop. My grandpa taught me indicators years ago that I still look for now. If a Silver Maple turns her leaves upside down, you best find shelter. If it’s raining and you see fog rising out of the hollows then the rain will soon quit. Both of those indicators are true more often than not. I find this information useful when I’m camping or hiking.
