Back in the days when I was still an avid hunter, I really enjoyed squirrel hunting. That was something I had been doing since childhood. For years the majority of squirrels were the grey squirrels. Red squirrels were a lot more rare. When I moved to Ohio, quite a few years ago, I went hunting once. Being a hillbilly on flat land, I’m not the least bit ashamed to say I was completely lost as soon as I lost sight of the road. But I did take three squirrels that day and all of them red squirrels I couldn’t believe my luck. Three red squirrels in one day. Turns out, in Ohio, red squirrels are the majority. I never went hunting for animals in Ohio after that. I was uncomfortable with feeling lost the whole time. I lost the heart for hunting while living in Ohio. Now I would much prefer to shoot animals with my camera.

I’m not sure why this squirrel made me think of Ohio. Maybe because it was red. At any rate I went on a short hike today and met this little guy. This photo along with others from the hike are on the Bolt Mountain site.

  1. good post, down here we have grays, black and fox squirrels. I do not think we have red squirrels.
