Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, I remember the days of the Citizens Band radio or CB very well. The language a distant memory but memorable none the less.

Talking on the CB was a favorite pastime of mine. I had postcards from other CB’ers from around the world. A CB was a lot like an AM radio at night because you could pick up skip if the conditions were right and talk to people from everywhere. Similar to an AM radio because some times at night you could listen to radio stations from a long ways off. The AM radio waves were also carried with the skip.

When you were talking skip basically your radio waves were bouncing off the atmosphere like a rock skipping across the surface of a pond. Hence the name skip.

The reason I bring this topic up is because my nickname rvnx11 is a byproduct of those cb’ing days. Back then I was known as raven x on the CB and a world wide talker, at least if the skip was rolling. When I first started with the internet, I wanted to use that name as my nickname but it was unavailable everywhere. One night my daughter and I was surfing the net. I don’t remember the exact details except that I was signing on to a community and since raven x was unavailable there was the usual list of alternates to choose from. Rvnx11 was one of the alternates, my daughter chose it for me and, well, as they say, the rest is history.

One of the books in my small library is a book with all the CB lingo in it with descriptions. It brings back a lot of memories thumbing through that old book. This song brings back those memories with a lot more clarity.

This is raven x signing off, ya’ll have a great day and I’ll be seeing you on the flipside… :)

  1. I haven’t thought of CB’s in years. When I was a kid my grandparents had a Winnebago motorhome (which we named Winnie) and my family would take long trips with them. They had a CB and my sister and I loved to get on it and talk to people. As I remember, my CB handle was Bookworm.

  2. Breaker 19…..breaker 19…..how boutcha raven x. You got your ears on? Whats your twenty? Theres a bear in the air. You doin the double nickels?
I used to get on the cb and jaw a bit myself. I still have my cobra cb. Remember getting on and asking for a radio check and some smart ass would come back with “I got mine”.
    10-4 good buddy…over and out.

  3. Thanx for commenting…

Kristine… I was actually watching a commercial recently about cell phone prices and a guy in the commercial had reverted back to using cb’s… that’s what made me think of it.

Dennie… I think soon I’m going to tell the story of the 3 Denny’s. Yeah I spelled it my way… kind of partial to it that way. :)

btw- I looked all over for a video clip with the song Convoy in it but everything I found was some type of parody so I just went with the one displayed.

  4. Ok, I know I’m out of it, but people don’t use them anymore? I know my mom still carries hers and I was thinking about buying one, but I moved into town and kind of lost all use for it.

  5. Oh they are still used… it’s just that they are not as popular as they were before the advent of the cell phone and the internet.

Truckers are the main users now. I also have a few friends that still use them.

It is just that when I was using them, they were as popular then as the internet today…

    Thanx for commenting Tracy…

  6. I still use a CB all the time when I am out four wheeling in Troubled Child, my 1986 Jeep Grand Wagoneer :) But we don’t use lingo… much. :)

Ever think about getting into amateur radio? Seems like it would be fun to talk around the planet. I only have a Tech license (no morse code) so I can only use 6 meter for skipping.

  7. :) that’s to cool… I actually have a couple of handhelds I use… Maybe I would have been closer to the truth saying the lingo is more in the past…

and another correction… I said in my last comment that it was as popular as the internet is now… not even close…

    btw— way cool jeep

  9. That’s funny… I wonder when the “I remember when I was a kid” stories actually start…. hmmm I’ve never looked at it from that angle. Probably about the same time the “I must be gettin’ old” phrase comes in to play… ;)

Thanx for commenting morgan ‘white diamond’… happy to see you here!!
