The one that comes to mind I heard while camping in Millers Fork, which is in the head of Peachtree Hollow.
My dog Sam and I were out exploring the surrounding area and had just come up through the bed of a hollow. I was standing about 30 or 40 yards downhill from a gaswell road. I had actually just found a couple four prongs of ginseng and was looking around for more. Sam was taking a nap nearby. Then out of nowhere a sound came from the road. The closest match I can think of would be a crow with a cold. It was a weird sound and loud. For a bit I couldn’t see the source and had no idea what could be producing that strange sound.
It was kind of eerie actually. Sam even perked up to see what it was. We stood there listening and watching for a long time. The vantage point I had only showed the vague resemblance of the road and I could see nothing on the road because of high weeds all along its bank.
I didn’t want to try to get closer until I identified what it was. It was moving constantly just back and forth in the same general area on the road making that weird sound the whole time.
After very quietly advancing towards the road, I saw it…
It turned out to be an experience I will never forget. The sound was coming from a doe as she gave birth to a fawn. I feel privileged to have witnessed even a small portion of this miracle. Sam and I were downwind and being very still. She never knew we were there.

I know of two Peachtree Hollows, one in Nicholas County, and another in Raleigh or Fayette. Was it one of these you were camping in?

Yes… it was the one in Raleigh County… it actually begins right here on Bolt Mountain.

That must have been a fascinating thing to see. Too bad you didn’t have a video camera, or even a regular camera, so you could have recorded the event.

Reasons like that one that I no longer go to the mountains without a camera… and new batteries.
