I was leafing through my 35mm photos again and found a few pictures of guns that I have owned. I enjoy target shooting with both the pistol and rifle. The problem with me though is with the pistol, I couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn if I was standing next to it.

If I had to say I had a favorite rifle out of the many, this one would be it. Bet you can’t guess the caliber. I’m not even going to put you through that… It is a 7.65 mauser mounted on a monte carlo stock with a satin finished barrel. I had a friend back then that built custom rifles. This one was very unique. The problem with it, it cost about $3 every time I pulled the trigger. The good thing about it, I could knock a flea off of a fence post at 300 yards give or take. That is if I was inclined to subject a flea to that…

I might not have been very good with a pistol but I grew up with a rifle in my hands. In the Army I scored expert with the M16 hitting the targets 50 for 50. The furthest target was 400m.

These next photos are from when a friend and I were target practicing in Ohio. We were the type of friends that was always in competition no matter what we were doing. I’ll admit it now, I wouldn’t have then, he is a lot better with the pistol.

One day my friend and I went target practicing and I brought my trusty camera. While we were shooting we were trying to get some good reaction photos showing the shell ejecting from the gun. The first picture is my friend. He is shooting a Russian made 45. That pistol was a brute and very heavy. If you had to use it to protect yourself, you could do a lot of damage wielding it like a club.

I am shooting a Ruger P89, 9mm. No wonder I couldn’t hit anything, my eyes are closed. My friend could hit the target much better with his $200 45 than I ever could with my $500 Ruger. But I was much faster with the camera. I got him there at least.

This was our target at about 30 yards away.

Adding to this post - I wanted to add this before I got some shame on you comments… It is best to always wear safety glasses along with hearing protection when firing a weapon, especially a handgun. And the photos were not taken from as close to the shooter as they appear. The camera had zoom capabilities and these photos have been enhanced to view here.

I think that covers it.. I was looking at this post and having flashbacks about a feeding bears post. :)

  1. Was fun to read about your target shooting. I enjoy a good plinking session myself… Strangely relaxing.

Lately I’ve been trying to get into rifle shooting in prep for my first hunting season. It’s tough, coming at it as a pistol shooter, without a lot of instruction. It is also relaxing and kind of peaceful in concentrating so hard :)

My current firearms of choice: CZ75B 9mm and Marlin .22 mag scoped rifle. I have others but those are the mainstays.

  2. Looks like fun. At $3 a shot, I’m hope you at least get to skin and eat the fleas.

  3. Michael… I find it relaxing as well. Like you said it’s a concentration thing… I couldn’t hit the ground with a pistol though.

Diesel… I could only find shells for that gun at one Army surplus store in Virginia @ $60 for 20. Loved that gun though, amazingly accurate. Have to be to go flea huntin’ :)
