During my recent short visit to D.C., I didn’t take the first picture. That is odd for me and my ever present digital camera. The reason is quite simple though, pictures of Washington landmarks can already be found all over the internet. For example, how can I take a picture of the Washington Monument and it be unique from every other? I couldn’t think of a way. I was only in D.C. for one night and a few hours the next morning. Most of this short time was spent either in class or traffic.

Starting Tuesday, I will be in D.C. for nine days. I’ve decided to take photos of things that maybe you don’t see everyday. I’ll be working on, literally, the inner workings of the city. This will give me a unique perspective of our nations capital. It is that perspective I intend to share with the internet. From backstage in Washington, should be interesting.

  1. There’s a statue of Einstein at the National Academy of Sciences (Constitution and 23rd). When I was there during the Reagan administration, they’d let the bushes grow wild around it one time when I went and he (Einstein) was trapped in the netting of branches, obscured to the point that you had to squint to make out what the statue was of.

I always wished I’d have gotten a picture of it like that because it was like an editorial statement on the Reagan administration’s approach to science and research (to forget it).

Washington is loaded with visual irony if you look among the landmarks to see what they’re not taking care of.

  2. I really hope to be able to capture some of the irony you mention. I don’t perceive that as being a difficult feat. :)

  3. I look forward to seeing your pics Denny! Be safe and enjoy yourself….

  4. Thanks Marian :)

  5. I think that’s a neat idea. Taking pictures of things people don’t normally see can give you a new perspective on something you think you already know.
