bib·li·o·phile - 1. A lover of books. 2. A collector of books.

Guilty as charged on both counts. I have been an active and sometimes obsessive reader from the days of The Hardy Boys. Anybody remember the original series? I was on every adventure ever undertaken by the Hardy boys. Most times I would be joining their adventures with a flashlight and a sheet over my head. (last book in original series 1979)

It was during those days I became a lover of books. If I was waiting for the next book in The Hardy Boys series then most likely I was off exploring the nether reaches of the universe (Issac Asimov, Ray Bradbury).

After the original Hardy Boys series my interest in topics started to grow. I had to find something to fill the lost space at the end of the series. I even ventured over to Nancy Drew for a book or two. Did you know Nancy Drew was first introduced in a Hardy Boys book? The Nancy Drew series actually started before the end of the original Hardy Boys series. Being as that is the case - I couldn’t really get interested in Nancy Drew because I felt a strange kind of loyalty for the Hardy boys. I think it was the boy girl thing. I felt much more comfortable, at that young age, going on adventures with other boys.

It was when I was first starting high school, my interests in books took off in many different directions. I picked up a Stephen King book for the first time as a freshman in high school and have been anxiously awaiting his next book since then. I think I have had them all at one time or another.

Stephen King opened up a whole new area in reading about the same time as scifi books started a major decline in my library. Scifi started to take on an aurora of an impossible future - flying cars by the year 2000 - things like that. I can follow a story just fine but it has to have some since of a possible reality otherwise I just find it ridiculous and can’t concentrate on the storyline.

All these years later, I still love to read. I have authors in my collection such as Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Michael Crichton, Tom Clancy, John Grisham, Dan Brown, Iris Johansen, and J.A. Jance to name a few. I have about two hundred books in my collection some of those being over 100 years old. Worthless to someone else, priceless to me.

I started thinking about my history with books actually on thinking about blogging. I believe the history I have with books contributes greatly to my blogging.

A Bibliophile - tried and true.

  1. i was a ‘nancy drew’ girl myself… i couldn’t read them quick enough. i think i read a few ‘hardy boys’ in between.

  2. I’ve always been a book addict and it started with the Hardy Boys. Like you - I couldn’t read them fast enough.

  3. I read Nancy Drew when I was little. I taught myself to read when I was four, and rapidly went through the kids books. I read anything and everything I can get my hands on. I have lots of favorite authors, too many to list here.

I do think loving to read has something to do with wanting to write. Most peole who write are pretty ravenous readers as well.

  4. I smiled at ravenous readers - good description. I am reading two books at the moment one being Johansen’s Stalemate and the other is the new Coal River book.
