First I want to say thank you to my friend Hanna for this award. This award is extra special because it doesn’t have anything to do with viral marketing. Not that I am against viral marketing. Hanna took the time to create it just to give it away. Thanks Hanna! :)

—From my community -

I’ve been hearing and feeling the explosions on Bolt Mountain this morning. One of those rattled the windows. I just can’t believe they are blowing up Bolt Mountain. I’ve been wanting to go for a four wheeler ride to get a closer look at the new MTR site but at the same time I don’t want to go look.

To the friends of coal - you think a cartoon bug pissed me off. You’ve definitely seen nothing yet.

I have to comment on the whole friends of coal movement. Seeing as how that is their name, it means all of these would work as well - friends of mountaintop removal, friends of profits, friends of CO2 and global warming, enemy of the resident, friends of waste, friends of sludge, champions of dishonesty. I could probably come up with a dozen or so more but there is no point. In my eyes the friends of coal are basically a group hellbent on getting every dollar they can get before their ugly little secret is revealed.

I think they try to pass mountaintop removal off as coal mining because it gives the guys driving the dozers and the front end loaders a feeling of belonging to a tradition much older than they are. The pride of being a coal miner. The difference - they will never stand up to the company for what they think is the right thing. They will never run a buggy or a bolt machine. They will never go underground in anything even remotely related to coal mining. The coal miner is a dying breed in West Virginia being replaced by construction and heavy equipment operators with no sense of tradition or community.

  1. Ciao Denny!
    “viral marketing”
    hahahhaah, forte!
However, some female (foto) in yours blog wants to us!
    Anyway thanx for this “placing”

In the second place, it’s a pity that the dying traditions…
    saluti da Italia!
    xoXo

  2. it reminds me of the whole situation in ‘the grapes of wrath’ during the depression. when they drove all the tenement farmers off the land and bulldozed all their little farms down to make way for huge farms for profit. the only ones able to make a living were the barons and the ones operating the machinery.

  3. I want to puke everytime I see a “Friends of Coal” sticker. “Friends of Money” is more like it. They’re definitely not “friends of West Virginians.”

  4. Thanks Hanna ;)

    Blue, exactly like that.

Rebecca the first time I heard Friends of Coal I thought it was a joke. How can somebody be friends with an inanimate object. I think it is ridiculous from the word go in every aspect.

  5. Yeah, it is. It’s actually kind of silly and funny if you substitute anything else for coal. Like “Friends of Cheese.” Except far less friendly — cheese isn’t hellbent on dragging an entire state into ruin.

    I like cheese better.

  6. It’s very sad to hear their blowing up bolt mountain. It’s such a beautiful place. I’ll have to bring the 4-wheeler down soon now that you have one to ride so we can go see just whats going on. We might have to view it from a different vantage point first….don’t want to get blown up.
