Lost Heritage

Since starting a blog I have done a lot of talking about Drews Creek, West Virginia. Recently the community of Drews Creek lost something very precious.

Old Workman Farm

This old house used to stand in the very head of Drews Creek and was the last spot of civilization before heading into the backwoods, and the first to see on returning. To look at it – someone could see any time all the way back to when the house was built. The siding was still the original lap and board, an outhouse still stands lopsided on a hill, and apple trees in the yard continue to feed the local wildlife. Nothing had changed in years accept for the addition of a coat of paint. Now it is nothing but ashes. In a fit of drunkenness or just ignorance someone decided to burn it down. There is no replacing what has been lost. Sometimes people just don’t think before they act.

Adding – I’m adding this old picture postcard because the photo for it was taken on the upper end of this house and gives a little indication of how old the home was.

  • Hello, Denny. What a shame that somebody would destroy someone’s personal property like that, not to mention a place that holds such significance of others as well. It’s astounding how little regard for others some people have. At least you’ve immortalized it to some extent with your photograph, I suppose.

Thanks for commenting Bryan. I think it is a shame. We lose enough of our heritage daily from things apparently beyond our control – self inflicted loss is senseless.

  • That’s so sad. I don’t know why people do things like that. I guess not enough people understand the importance of history.

  • Man, that kind of bastardry really p____ me off. There are so many good people and beautiful old buildings in your part of the world, but regretably there are some trashy morons as well. I remember on the AT, the ATC people would warn hikers to camp or stay in shelters in places too far from the road for idiots with cars and six-packs (and who knows what else) to visit. The shelters accessible to cars were invariably vandalised and degraded; trash was dumped everywhere. That people (presumably) from the local area would foul their own nests like that astounds me. I’m angry now, Denny, and it’s only breakfast time! Thanks a lot…

I don’t know either Kristine – these people were probably bored. Looking to tear something up.

Mountaingoat – believe me I know exactly what you mean. I love this state and for people to trash it so recklessly just grates on my nerves. A place I go a lot to take photos is Peachtree Falls which is actually just a couple of miles from this house. But anyway right up from the falls is an area where people are dumping garbage. That makes me so mad I can’t see straight. I’ve written the DNR and the EPA a few times but nobody has ever gotten back with me. They just don’t seem to care…
