The One That Got Away

I have to be curious about this because of two recent game camera photos, can deer see infrared? This one gives every indication of seeing something.

Either deer can see infrared light or this camera was malfunctioning and using the incandescent flash. Since the bear attacked the other camera with the flash set for incandescent I have been only using the infrared flash. I didn’t think to check it while at the camera this trip so I’ll have to clear up the setting mystery on the next trip. I thought it was interesting that I got eight photos of this doe. She stayed in the vicinity of this camera for over 3 1/2 hours.

I’m finding these game cameras to be a nice little hobby. I’m always anxious to see what I have captured and now with the second camera in a new location, it takes all day to check them.

After the bear tried to take the second camera apart I took it and set it up in Martin’s Creek aimed at what appeared to be strictly a deer trail. Martin’s Creek is nice and secluded once you get in the head of the hollow. The ATV trail leading into the hollow actually follows along a dry creek bed for the biggest part of the trip. It is real rocky and probably one of the roughest trails I’ve been on. I would say it doesn’t get many casual riders. With that in mind, I thought I’d try to get some wildlife photos from an area not frequented by man.

The pictures in this post came from the camera still in the Spring Hollow area. I checked both cameras yesterday and so far the one in Martin’s Creek has not taken any photos.

Since ginseng season starts Sept. 1, I’ll probably not be back in the mountains until then. Right at the moment I’m tentatively planning on a few days camping and ginsenging next week. I’ll have to wait and see how that pans out. For the time being I’m going to leave you with the one bear photo I captured with the Spring Hollow cam this week. I think a good title for it would be The One That Got Away.

  • Well, at least the bear didn’t try to eat the camera this time. That’s something.

Game cameras do look like fun. It is neat to see what’s out there when you’re not.

I’m really enjoying the cameras. They are another reason to go to the mountains and like you said it is interesting to see what is moving about when we are not present. So far I couldn’t be happier with the camera in Spring Hollow. It is producing a lot of photos.
