Clarification Please

Published by Denny under Uncategorized

The other day when I wrote the post The BWD and MTR I made a mis-statement in that post that actually completely changed the meaning of what I was trying to get at. This comment “As far as the grassroots and environmental organizations around here, I can create a big enough stir without your help - thank you very much.” The word your in that comment was supposed to be their. It was directed at the people emailing me and wasn’t meant to put off those organizations. One small word changed the tone of the entire post and that was unintentional. So basically if you are working to stop MTR you have an ally and not an enemy. I apologize for the misunderstanding. I was a little upset when I wrote that post. I actually didn’t even realize my mistake until receiving an email today concerning the post. The post has been changed to reflect what I meant to say.

Hitting The Mark

Published by Denny under Uncategorized

I was out surfing my blogging buddies sites when I was pleasantly surprised to find I was given another award. This one comes from my good friend Speedcat Hollydale. I am proud to be a part of the World Record Breaking Award Ceremony Held At The Speedcat Hollydale Page.

Seeing as how Speedcat was breaking a record and giving this award to everybody I’m going to hang on to this one and give it away on a spur of the moment basis.

I want to thank Eric (Speedcat) for including me in this world record breaking event. For anybody unfamiliar Eric is a pretty cool guy that blogs at The Speedcat Hollydale Page. I have borrowed material from him a couple of times for my own posts, with his permission, of course. But anyway he has a cool blog definitely worth a visit. Check it out and draw you own conclusions. One thing I guarantee, you will be smiling…

Thanks Speedcat

Autumn and the Changing of the Colors

Published by Denny under Uncategorized

In lieu of sounding like a broken record, I absolutely love this time of year. Leaves are changing colors, the air has a little bite to it, nights are clear enough to see all the heavens portrayed on a jet black background. I would be extremely happy if it stayed like this year around.

This is the Maple tree in my front yard. It is only a few years old. I’m grooming it to be a shade tree. In another couple of years I would like to build a deck around its base. Right at the moment it’s leaves are every shade from green through bright orange. By the time I get home again, all of it’s leaves may be on the ground. Hope not though…

I think for the next couple weekends at home I’m going to be doing some color progression posts.
The leaves will most likely change a lot faster than that, so some of the photos will come from Logan and Boone counties. Hopefully one of the photos from Logan will have a white deer in it. :)

I’ve been getting things ready to go back on the road. It seems like I spend 11 days on the road and the 3 days home I spend getting ready to go on the road. It’s a familiar cycle.

I was almost finished with the post when I went out to watch the sun set through the trees. I believe the bright orange tree is also a maple but can’t tell for sure from here. But anyway this picture doesn’t do it justice. With the sun hitting it at a right angle this tree seemed to be on fire. Couldn’t help but catch my attention.

Site Update

Published by Denny under Uncategorized

Just wanted to post and let everybody interested know where this blog stands. Thanks to the help of some friends and a little eBay business this site and the Bolt Mountain site have our heads above water again. To the friends that helped, thank you, someday I will be able to repay your kindness and generosity. And you know who you are…

Another order of business, I have decided to keep the 3-column layout. What can I say? I’m a gadget hound. Along those lines… notice the shoutbox in the left sidebar, that’s like a free plug for you so just say Hi or something. Also I have added a growing playlist to the bottom of this page. Those songs are some of my favorites. Hope you like them!!!

In The Army Now

Published by Denny under Uncategorized

Ok, maybe not now. But we were then… I’m the one on the left, for those unfamiliar, and that’s my friend Leonard on the right. He was from the great state of Mississippi. We started basic together and was lucky enough to serve our first duty station together at Camp Casey, Korea.

This photo was taken at Tent City about two miles from the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) that separates North and South Korea. This border is the most heavily armed border in the world. I was stationed at Camp Casey with the 2nd Infantry Division located at Tongduchon. Tongduchon is 11 miles south of the DMZ and 40 miles north of Seoul. Our division spent three months at Tent City in the summer of ‘83 basically taking our turn at DMZ guard duty.

I loved Korea, everything about it. The people, culture, history, it was just an amazing place. Korea was the land of sliding doors, heated floors, and slant eyed…. Anyway, Korea was also the shopping center of the world. Everything was cheaper than in the states. Back in the 80’s if you were in the mood to get drunk, you could go downrange or downtown and buy a 12oz bottle of Soju and a 16oz bottle of Coke all with $1 and quickly proceed to get yourself and at least two buddies plastered. I have a few good memories of Korea, a few bad, and a few unclear. Overall I have good memories and would love to go back for a visit some day…

Layout Change

Published by Denny under Uncategorized

Over the next few hours I am going to be changing the layout of this blog. I’ll be starting this experiment with the simple Minima layout. I want to make this blog a 3-column blog just to make it feel more balanced. I haven’t as of yet played around with the code for these templates. So, for a bit anyway, it is hard to say what this blog will look like. But as long as you can see this post….

I think I am done with the layout for a bit. It seems kind of crowded like this so the jury is still out on keeping it. For viewers using 800×600 screen resolutions, you may end up with a horizontal bar at the bottom of your page because the width of this layout had to be set at 815. Once I’ve scaled down some of the sidebar clutter I can then take the layout back to the 800px width. That’s not going to happen today…

Happy Mother’s Day

Published by Denny under Uncategorized

When God Made Moms

When the good Lord was creating mothers!!
He was into his sixth day of overtime when the angel appeared and said,
“Your doing a lot of fiddling around on this one.”
AND THE LORD SAID, “Have you read the specs on this order?
She has to be completely washable, have 180 movable parts, all replaceable.
Run on black coffee and leftovers.
Have a lap that disappears when she stands up,
a kiss that can cure anything from a broken leg
to a disappointed love affair, and six pairs of hands.”
And the angel shook her head slowly and said,
“Six pairs of hands… no way.”
“It is not the hands that are causing me the problems,” said the Lord,
“It’s the three pairs of eyes that mothers have to have.”
“That’s on the standard model?” asked the angel.
The Lord nodded… One pair that sees through doors when she asks
“What are you kids doing in there?” when she already knows.
Another here in the back of her head that sees what she shouldn’t,
but what she has to know

and of course the ones here in front that can look at a child when he goofs up and say,
“I understand and I love you”, without so much as uttering a word.”
“Lord”, said the angel touching his sleeve gently, “go to bed, tomorrow….”
“I can’t”, said the Lord, “I’m so close to creating something so close to myself.
Already I have one who heals herself when she is sick….
can feed a family of six on one pound of hamburger,
and can get a nine year old to stand under a shower.”
The angel circled the model of a mother very slowly.
“It’s too soft”, she sighed.
“But tough!” said the Lord excitedly.
You cannot imagine what this mother can do or endure.”
“Can it think?”
“Not only can it think, but it can reason and compromise”, said the Creator.
Finally the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek.
“There’s a leak”, she pronounced.
“I told you, you were trying to put too much into this model.”
“It’s not a leak”, said the Lord. “It’s a tear”.
“What’s it for?”
“It’s for joy, sadness, disappointment, pain, loneliness and pride.”
“You’re a genius,” said the angel.
The Lord looked somber…..
“But I didn’t put it there.”
